Children's Book Illustrator...
Book illustration - easy as clockwork.
Over the years I've illustrated lots of children's books and have even written and illustrated a range of my own so I know exactly what it means to want it exactly right.
Illustrations are essential in any fun children's story, yet they only make-up a small portion of the finished book and unless you're already a published author with first-hand knowledge of the print industry, then putting the words and pictures together and turning them up into a professional, high-quality printed book can be something of a minefield.
But don't worry, help is on hand as I can guide you through every step of the process to ensure your book looks every bit as good as those you see in the shops.
Well, every job is different and prices vary depending on how much detail you want to include but hopefully the sliding scale below will give some indication as to what you might realistically expect to pay per illustration.
We’ll use a story about Chaz, an elephant who loves jazz, as an example to show the amount of work required along with the associated costs. Just run your cursor over each amount to reveal either more or less of the illustration.
£25 will get you a black and white illustration of Chaz showing a good representation of his character.
For £50 that same illustration will be fully coloured and shaded to the highest standard which will be suited for either printed or digital media.
£100 will get you an additional character, so in this example, Chaz’s best friend, Sammy, would be thrown in too.
£150 would allow for even more detail. So again, in this example, you could show not just Chaz and Sammy but their whole jazz quintet, all illustrated in glorious colour and fully shaded to the highest standard.
Finally, for £200 you could have even more detail included. In Chaz’s story, for example, you could show his whole band set against a background that illustrates a specific part of the story, most likely occupying a whole page or even a double-page spread.
This guide should enable you to work out your costs and see just how many books you need to sell before seeing a profit. Also, by setting your own retail price, you can determine exactly how soon you will make your money back!
For books with twelve illustrations or less, work will normally be completed within 2-4 weeks, at which time I will send you a full set of print-ready images all set for publication. For an additional cost, I can put the book together, too - design the pages, select a typeface that works well with the pictures, give it a great, eye-catching front cover and make sure it's all completely ready to be professionally printed - I'll even send it to the printers too!
My only stipulation is that full payment is made before commencement of any work. It is also important to mention that any revisions required, over and above any work previously agreed, will be charged as extra.
I do try to be as flexible as possible and any advice is free - so please get in touch!
Together we can get things moving.
Before starting work, you'll need to send me the full text of your story and any ideas you might have about what illustrations you would like on each page - although if you're not sure I can offer help with that. Once I have all the information I need I'll get started with the rough sketches and send each one to you for your approval before I begin the finished illustration - you'll already know the kind of thing to expect from the examples shown below - and please don't forget to check out my excellent reviews!
